Sentient Volatiles or Telepaths are special type of volatile that appears in Dying Light: The Following and Dying Light: The Beast.
At first, a Sentient Volatile is an Infected that has the appearance of a volatile but can control themselves during the day. At night, however, the Sentient Volatile loses itself to its Volatile instincts. Sentient Volatiles can "talk" through telepathy.
During the event of Dying Light: The Beast, further experimentation by the Baron have evolved the Sentient Volatiles into new form of humans and they themselves have find a way to maintain their humanity throughout the day through the infusion of a compound made from a special mushroom.
Origins
According to disclosure, the person can become a Sentient Volatile after drinking a vial of blue liquid, or the supposed "cure", which actually is a failed military attempt to create a bio weapon that the Mother uses its mist to protect her Following (and infect Crane when he rejects her plan).
The Baron managed to secure several vials of the serum from Kyle Crane after his escape from Harran to create more Sentient Volatiles and enhance them with Kyle Crane to be the first to be experimented on. Eventually, these group of Sentient Volatiles escaped and formed a community called the Exiles in Castor Woods. Due to the Baron's genetic enhancement procedure, the Exiles and Kyle Crane still retains their human appearances and sentience throughout the day, unlike the Mother. However, they (except Kyle) need constant infusion of a compound made from a special form of mushroom to halt their mental degradation into regular infected.
Meanwhile, in seperate case, Vincent Waltz, a former GRE scientist, who conducted illegal experiments with the THV virus on children in pursuit to create a vaccine, and also experimented on his own Renegades, making them feral in process, managed to forcibly merged with THV inside his body and evolved into artificial Sentient Volatile, by constant usage of Inhibitors for decades. Like Crane, Waltz retains most of his human appearance (with an exception for a clearly visible and swollen veins all over his body) and sentience, through the latter is deteriorating as time went on and higher dose the drug taken, resulted in his instable emotions and ferality that ususally shown when he get anger.
Of all the Sentient Volatiles, Kyle Crane is the most successful specimen and the Baron wants to replicate it to create more Sentient Volatiles like him so the GRE can rule the world with an army of Apex Predators. His efforts were fruitless as he only managed to create unstable monstrosities called the Chimera. That is until he captured Aiden Caldwell, a survivor that was already subjected to a number of experiments from a former GRE scientist, his adoptive father Vincent Waltz. With Aiden, the Baron was finally able to successfully replicate Kyle's abilities, classifying him as "The Beast".

Abilities
Sentient Volatiles have telepathic capability enabling them to communicate with their minds with each others through vast distances. An interesting fact about Sentient Volatiles is that they are fertile, unlike regular infected. Anna is the first Sentient Volatile to get pregnant from her lover, Ron.
Their telepathic power can be further enhanced through the research of Dr Camillo Marin, which enabling them to command Biters to do their biddings. At full power, they can control Demolishers, Goons or even other Volatiles. They can also conduct psychic attack on human like the case of Lydia when she causes the Baron to suffer massive migraine.
Vincent Waltz, Kyle Crane and Aiden Caldwell are the only Sentient Volatiles to have access to not only telepathy but also the strength, ferocity and agility of regular Volatiles. Their abilities can be further enhanced through the injection of biocatalyst called GSB.
